Researchers have found that medicinal cannabis could be a promising treatment for adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to a study published in Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology. The study investigated the effects of medicinal cannabis on 74 autistic participants, with an average age of 33, and found improvements in their health-related quality of life, anxiety, depression and sleep after one-, three- and six-month intervals.
The study’s findings indicate that using cannabis can improve health-related quality of life, anxiety, depression and sleep without the need to modify the core traits of autism. Simon Erridge, head of research and access at Sapphire Medical Clinics, who led the study, emphasized that additional research is required to fully comprehend the possible benefits of medical cannabis for adults with ASD.
